Green-to-Clean Recovery
Woke up to a swamp instead of a swimming pool? It happens fast in the Houston heat. Retro Ink Pools clears algae blooms across Cypress, Katy, Cinco Ranch, and Fulshear, usually without draining a drop, and gets you back to a backyard you actually want to use.
The slider shows a real Cypress recovery: deep green on the left, swim-ready on the right. Getting there is a process, not a single dump of chemicals. On the first visit we test the water, then brush every wall, step, and the floor to knock the algae loose so it is exposed to chlorine instead of hiding on the plaster. We then shock the pool with a heavy, measured dose of chlorine and set the pump to run continuously.
Once the algae is dead it turns from green to a cloudy gray or white and sinks. We add flocculant or clarifier when the bloom is heavy to speed that up, then vacuum the settled debris straight to waste so it never loads up your filter. A typical light-to-moderate green pool is swimmable in about 24 hours; a badly neglected pool that has gone dark green can take 48 to 72 hours of repeated treatment and filtration.
Mustard (yellow) and black algae are tougher cases. Mustard algae clings to shady walls and resists normal chlorine levels, and black algae roots into plaster and grout, so both need extra brushing, higher chlorine, and sometimes a second pass. We will tell you on day one which type you are dealing with and exactly how long your pool will take.
Green pools are practically a season around here. Our long, humid summers keep water temperatures high, and warm water lets algae multiply explosively the moment chlorine dips. A pool that looked fine on Friday can be solid green by Monday if the chlorinator runs out or the pump is off during a heat wave.
Rain is the other culprit. A heavy Gulf Coast storm dumps gallons of fresh water into the pool, diluting the chlorine and dragging in dirt, pollen, and phosphates from lawn fertilizer and runoff. Phosphates are essentially fertilizer for algae, so a pool surrounded by well-fed St. Augustine grass is primed to bloom after every downpour. Add a clogged filter or a timer set too short and you have the perfect recipe for a swamp.
Clearing the pool once is only half the fix. The real solution is consistent chlorine, controlled phosphates, and enough daily filtration, which is exactly what our weekly pool cleaning service delivers across Cypress, Katy, Cinco Ranch, and Fulshear. Most homeowners who call us for a green-to-clean stay on weekly service afterward simply because they never want to see their pool turn green again.
Most green pools in the Cypress and Katy area are swimmable again within about 24 to 48 hours, depending on how severe the algae bloom is. A pool that has just turned cloudy or light green can often clear in a single day, while a deep-green or black-green pool that has been neglected for weeks may take two to three days of treatment and filtration. We give you a realistic timeline up front after we test the water on the first visit.
No. A green pool is not safe to swim in. Algae itself is not the main danger, but green water signals that the chlorine is depleted, which means bacteria such as E. coli and other pathogens can survive in the water. Algae also makes surfaces dangerously slick and hides drains and the bottom of the pool, which is a serious drowning hazard. Stay out of the water until we have shocked it, balanced it, and confirmed the chemistry is safe.
Not if the pool is maintained properly. Algae returns when chlorine drops, phosphates build up, or filtration runs too little, all of which are common in the Houston heat. As part of green-to-clean we remove phosphates and rebalance the water so the bloom does not immediately come back. The most reliable way to keep a pool clear is consistent weekly service, and most of our green-to-clean customers move onto our weekly maintenance plan so they never face a green pool again.
Usually no. In the vast majority of cases we can recover a green pool chemically without draining it, which protects your plaster and avoids the cost and risk of an empty pool in Houston's high water table. We only recommend a partial or full drain in extreme cases, such as severe black algae embedded in old plaster or water chemistry that is too far gone to correct economically. We will always tell you honestly which approach makes sense before doing any work.
